Vendor Feature: Blackwing

For many, the humble pencil is a tool of necessity—a means to an end. But for those in the know, the Blackwing pencil is an object of art, a testament to craftsmanship and a symbol of creative expression. Let's dive into the story of Blackwing, a brand that has captured the hearts of artists, writers, and musicians alike.

A History Rooted in Excellence

The Blackwing pencil's journey begins in the early 20th century, with the Eberhard Faber Pencil Company. Introduced in the 1930s, the original Blackwing 602 quickly became a favorite among creatives. Its unique design, featuring a distinctive flat ferrule and replaceable eraser, set it apart from its contemporaries. But it wasn't just the look that drew people in—it was the performance. The Blackwing 602 was renowned for its smooth, dark lines and exceptional quality.

The Legacy Continues

Despite its popularity, production of the Blackwing 602 ceased in the 1990s, much to the dismay of its devoted following. However, the story didn't end there. In 2010, Palomino revived the Blackwing brand, paying homage to the original while introducing new variations that cater to a range of artistic needs. Today, Blackwing offers several core pencil models:

· Blackwing 602: True to its legacy, this pencil is perfect for writers and everyday use, offering a balance of darkness and point retention.
· Blackwing Pearl: A versatile pencil that bridges the gap between the 602 and the original Blackwing, ideal for both writing and drawing.
· Blackwing: Known for its soft and dark lead, this pencil is favored by artists who need rich, dark lines.
· Blackwing Natural: The latest addition, featuring an extra-firm graphite, ideal for precise lines and detailed work.

A Commitment to Creativity

Blackwing's mission extends beyond crafting high-quality pencils. The brand is dedicated to fostering creativity and supporting artists. Through their Blackwing Foundation, they provide funding for music and art programs in schools, ensuring that the next generation has the tools and opportunities to explore their creative potential.

At hello & handshake, we will carry two of my favorite Blackwing products: the 602 and the 602 shorty. The graphite in 602 is for the Goldilocks of pencil users: not too soft, not too hard, rather is just right for daily use. We also carry replacement erasers (for those volumes you may already have swimming around in the bottom of your bag!) and sharpeners to ensure a Blackwing is the first pencil you always reach for.
